Varna is a city with a long history and bold culture of over 6000 years. Throughout its history, the city’s architecture has rapidly changed with many styles and materials. But still, to Varna’s climate and culture, the buildings in the town remain solid form with strong architectural language.
Our main goal for this proposal is to create a “modern sculpture” inside the most important public space of the city. Adding and removing the mass will treat the submission like an artifact, but its form remains a simple contemporary building. The overall shape of the proposed library retains the essential grid of city urban, connecting with every possible site circulation.
By mixing monochrome polycarbonate panels, glazing panels, and a white marble interior, the building matches the brutalism community hall next door in a grey concrete-white color theme. It makes it stand out from the rest of the local buildings around. Those materials are similar when you look at them from a distance. This makes buildings envelop a continuing game of defining the transparent and solid in between. The little struggle mind game brings out a metaphor for the priceless of knowledge. Everything could be a blur or a solid stone in front of you until you learn and find the truth inside.
From the overall view angle, the proposed form and the material give the library a strong character and bold identity without breaking off the communication with the surrounding building.

young studio cưng architects was one of many participants in the competition. their proposal was to create a ‘modern sculpture’ that would, in a sense, be a monolithic artifact that would hold thousands of other artifacts. a bit unclear metaphorically, the proposal is saved by retaining a strong architectural language that fits well within the context of neighboring structures. the proposed ‘library’ is constructed using a mix of monochromatic polycarbonate and glazed panels, with a dominantly white marble interior. the façade is both transparent and solid, which was done to both entice possible guests, and provide a clear view to the seaside garden: the city’s largest, oldest, and best known park.
